An Irish Independent article says that President Michael D. Higgins is entitled to change his mind and go for a second term.
Of course he is.
But that would display lack of integrity by the President in going back on his word to be a single term president, as he stated in 2011.
In fact the Irish Independent writer showed his own lack of appreciation of the important part that integrity must play in the election of President of Ireland.
The bar has fallen very low in politics in Ireland where there is now an accepted no need for integrity at all.
Sinn Fein won’t allow Gerry Adams to run because they would have to answer questions as to whether he was in the IRA. PBP miss up on an opportunity to propose someone like Bob Geldof because they typically can’t agree on anybody. That leaves Senator Craughwell who as the only politician of integrity involved, has challenged President Higgins but is finding difficulty in getting himself nominated due to a Fianna Fail and Fine Gael shut out, thus displaying their fine democratic credentials.
